IWSG

Hey guys to join up to this awesome group go HERE. Trust me it is fun and there may be cookies...maybe.

(Yay return of the cartoons!!)

Okay so this month I have a lot on my mind, but I will try to keep this post shorter than my last.

There are some people who can focus. They have this one thing they want to do. They put themselves behind it and off they go.

I envy those people. I myself have too many things I want to do. Part of me says just find one and stick to it. The problem I have with this is, when I neglect those things I don't feel whole.

There is at least three books I am writing on at the moment, with others in line clamoring for attention. I decided to take a sketch book challenge to try and better my artwork. Basically it is a year long challenge that ask you to fill a sketch book every two months. There are illustrations for a book I am hired to be doing. I am also trying to work on clay figures for a friend and he thinks I should try to sell them.

This is on top of kids, wife, yard work and trying to get better at marketing (can anyone just slap me until I get regular blogs up?). Now, I am not really complaining. I love doing this stuff and it is part of who I am as a person. I guess I just want to pose a question.

All you creative people out there. Do you feel it is better to work on one thing to completion and then move on? Or do you feel that it is fine to just do things as they come to you and then end up with many projects completed? Either way I see grey hairs in my immediate future.

Anyway, these are my thoughts for this month. I hope you are all well. As always, have fun and keep writing.

  1. If I try to work on too many things, nothing gets done. I focus on one writing project and one music project at a time. I do envy that you have multiple ideas and stories though. No idea what that's like!

  2. I'm one of those focused people, but there are times I get involved in more than one or two things. I guess I'm getting better at saying no. Of course, now that I'm published and there are royalties involved (which will increase again when I release more books), it's easier to stay focused. Dwindling dollars tend to do that. :P

IWSG #179 until Alex culls the list again.

  3. I went MIA for a while, so I'm the last person to slap you. Like you, I have lots of ideas, but I am able to divide them in terms of relevance and execution. I started a story that I hope to be my magnum opus one day, but stopped because I do not have the skill set needed to do it right, at this moment. What that is for you is up to you to decide. :)

  4. I would be more than happy to cyber-slap your for your posts. Oh wait, I kinda already do. Never mind...

I used to be able to focus. Now I can't; there's way too much going around everywhere. I'm going with multiple projects right now, wherever inspiration is calling that's where I'm going. I know I have to work in some kind of order, but sometimes there's no sense in wasting time trying to work on something we're stuck on. Eh. I don't know which works best :-/

Yay for the blog drawings! And have fun with the sketch project! :D

  5. I tend to take things one at a time, but I have several friends who work on multiple projects at once, and it goes well for them. I think it's a matter of how your brain works. There's no wrong way to create :)

  6. I love the cartoon. I'm a very focused person--most of the time. I like to work on a project until I'm tired of it. I refresh myself by working on something else. The day doesn't have enough hours for everything I want to do, so I have to be choosy. I try to set priorities, but life interferes.

    Love,
    Janie

  7. I'm not focused at all. I keep a bunch of things going on at once... and I think I've only recently learned a technique to complete any of them at all. That is, prioritize. If there are several things that could be done in this instant (in my case today - work on a logo for compendium, upload art/entries to compendium, work on the next book, visit blogs, cut the grass) I ask myself a few questions.
Which is the most vital? Which is the least vital? Which will I not have the opportunity to do again?
I'd argue that 'write the next book' is the most vital.
The weather's cooling off so 'cut the grass' is the least. I can do that next weekend.
'Visiting blogs' is something i can only do from the computer I'm at now. I won't have this opportunity again until this time next week probably (don't ask) SO, here I am :)
If not for this kind of system (and always keeping a 'to do' list) I'd be lost. I'm just way too scattered.

Don't stress over not posting regularly, bro. Not worth the unnecessary stress.

  8. YAY!! Return of the cartoons. I'm always happy to see your art work. And as far as answering your question, I have the most wicked case of ADD and can't focus on any one thing at a time. Drives my hubs and the kids bananas, but that's just how I am. Consequently, I don't really feel like I am the best person to answer this question, LOL
