Reading/Writing

I was reflecting today on what got me into this writing thing. It is probably the same thing that gets most writers into writing. Books.

I can be in the worst mood and walk into a book store or a library and instantly feel happy again.

After I got my first book out there I started the road that is marketing/getting the next book out. Between that and personal stuff I made a huge mistake. I stopped reading. I think I went a solid 8 months with no reading and for me that is a long time.

It is strange really because it isn't like I am getting ideas from what I read. I think it is more so that I am resting my brain and enjoying myself. Of course if I enjoy a really good scene I will sometimes reread it and try to figure out what made me love it. Still, I am a better, more productive writer when I read.

This last month I have finished reading three novels and my writing output has never been better. Life is balance, mixing work with something you love can be very healthy.

Anyway just some of my musing for today. What are you guys reading? As always have fun and keep writing.

P.S. I added an about the author tab and something else up there I can't wait to share more on.

  1. I have a post for The Cephalopod Coffeehouse today. My favorite book of the month is In the Midst of Life by Jennifer Worth I laugh your drawings. They are wonderfully whimsical.

    Love,

  2. I used to tell my students that they were what they read. Once had a brilliant 3rd gr. who insisted on reading Little Pony type books.
So glad your writing keeps pace with your reading.

  3. Reading does get me in the right state of mind for writing also! I think it's relaxing and really just brings up the love for stories and kinda fuels the writing spark! :)

  4. I wrote so I could read the stories I could find anywhere else, but it took a lot of reading to realize that.
Funny, I'm eBook only now, but years ago, going to the mall meant to trip to the bookstore no matter what. It was always the one place my wife and I stopped at and enjoyed.

  5. I cannot imagine living without reading although my husband does. He rarely reads a book at all. I am currently reading the latest Mistborn book by Brandon Sanderson called Shadows of Self. Good reading.

    1. I love Sanderson. Mistborn was a great series. You should read his Stormlight Archive series.

  6. Ooh, intriguing news on that mysterious tab up top... A new work in progress?

I dig the new contact section.

I've noticed I kind of read different things depending on which draft I'm writing. First draft or two I can be reading whatever or even not reading. But toward the final drafts, I want to be reading more in the style of what I'm going for. Not necessarily the same genre, but definitely a similar style / voice / POV, etc.

    1. I totally get that. When I read also it makes me want to work on different projects. I guess that could be considered a down side to it.

Yeah a project many years in the making, but what isn't with me, lol. Hopefully by Summer I can share more.
