Inspiration Friday

So I have been thinking and while I love the random post I often do, I think It is time to start ordering my blog a bit. So one of the things I'm going to start doing is picking a topic and finding three things in that topic that inspire me. Today's topic is, TELEVISION.

First up we have THE WALKING DEAD.
Now I have to start this by saying I'm not really a zombie nut. I have never read a zombie novel and while I love movies like Shawn of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead, most zombie movies come off as just okay to me. So why do I feel inspired by this particular show? The characters. They are so real and it is amazing to see the physical and emotional journeys they go on from season to season. I don't want to have any spoilers here for people catching up, but the strain of what some of these people have had to do would break most people. They are the consummate survivors. I love watching the best and worst of human nature play out in the most miserable conditions ever. It is gory, and there are adult themes, but if you can handle these things, I would suggest watching this show.

Next is CASTLE.
Okay so first off the show alone is great, it is funny, smart and has an author for the main character. Short premise: Richard Castle is a New York Times best selling crime author. One day someone uses his books as a theme to create a murder and he is brought in to help consult, loves solving the murder so much he stays. High jinks and a unrequited romance ensue. Now this is a crime drama/comedy so one of the ways it inspires me is I am actually working on a novel that has those elements and is set in a fantasy world. This one was hard for me because a similar show I like is Elementary. The reason CASTLE won? Two words, Nathan Fillion. I mean come on Firefly, I love this guy. I even enjoyed his small moment in Saving Private Ryan(he's in it, go watch.) I heard he is going to be in the new Percy Jackson movie so YAY for that.

Last we have GAME OF THRONES.
This show is so captivating, I remember reading the books and falling in love. So when I heard they were going to do a show I was excited and apprehensive.  It turns out they know what they are doing over there at HBO. This show has everything from love and hate to sex and violence. In depth characters are hanging from the rafters and the story line keeps you, at times, on the edge of your seat. This is not a happy story and for sure not one where being a hero means you can save the day...or even live through the day. You will get attached and dread every minute wondering if your favorite character might be next. It shows a lot about building suspense and keeping track of multiple characters in a cohesive and enjoyable way. Plus, it has dragons. Go Watch Now!!!

Anyway these are three things that inspire me, what inspires you? As always have fun and keep writing.

  1. Hmm, I haven't seen Castle or Game of Thrones... yet.
    But Elementary? *Me loves*
And The Walking Dead? I normally cannot handle gory stuff and I'm not really into zombies but this I'm obsessed with. Nevermind that I would be killed in a heartbeat for wanting to help everyone I find in my path but gosh those characters are awesome and they make me want to be badass like them. I can dream, right?

PS. That's a cool drawing at the top ;)

    1. Oh yes I love Elementary. I think I would do okay if it happened, but maybe not 'cause I'd want to help people too. We can both dream of being Zombie bad-asses, lol.

Thanks, I couldn't find a picture so I jut drew one.

  2. Never watched Castle because I didn't really enjoy that actor in Firefly either. Walking Dead and Game of Thrones on the other hand are brilliantly written and so well filmed, well done on all fronts. I can't say they inspire me to produce art or writing but then that doesn't mean they never will. Great post!

  3. Castle is awesome. Fillion rocks.
I don't have HBO, so I've only seen season one of Game of Thrones.
Walking Dead - just on at a bad time. I eventually lost track of it.

    1. I actually got HBO for Game of Thrones, lol. Yeah I didn't catch Walking Dead the first season I bought the Blu-ray and then had to start watching it.

  4. I'm a huge Walkind Dead and Game of Thrones fan. Castle I tried watching a few times and it didn't hold my attention.

If you ever do decide to try a zombie book. World War Z by Max Brooks has a unique take on it. So does the Feed series by Mira Grant. The latter tells the story through a future blogger newscast. The thought of Bloggers some day being the main source of news was kind of intriguing. (Hugs) Indigo

  5. Great choices. As of now, a huge inspiration to my writing is "The Vampire Diaries" - the character development on that show is insane. The characters are so complex and layered. They just really captivate me and inspire me to write amazing characters, as well!

Awesome post and thanks for sharing! :)

  7. Reading your point of view on The Walking Dead helps me understand a bit more why my soon to be hubby is sooooo incredibly addicted to the series! I'm in the midst of harboring a very passionate obsession with my own TV series right now though...(Son's of Anarchy)...((I know, it's a biker soap opera...but I can't help myself! lol)).

  8. Unfortunately I don't have the channel for Game of Thrones so I always have to wait until the DVD comes out for the newest series.

I love The Walking Dead and Castle. Great characters, great plots. Especially Castle. I love their reference episodes. The Ring, Found Footage, Zombie... always hilarious because Castle always gets so geeky and hopeful that it's all real. Well, maybe except the Ring-like episode.

I've really got into Once Upon A Time recently. Just caught the first season on demand and was hooked. I loved how the fairy tale characters history were repeated again in their fake lives as normal people.

    1. I love that especially when they reference Firefly.

Once Upon a Time. This is another show I started watching and then a schedule change caused me to miss out I'm so lost with it now, but I was really enjoying it.

      Have you ever watched Grimm?

  9. Game of Thrones is one of my all-time favorites! I didn't start watching until shortly before Season 2, and I had a Season 1 marathon, I was that hooked! A friend of mine said not to get too attached to anybody. lol -- I read the books between Seasons 2 and 3, and really hope Martin finishes the sixth book.

    1. Yeah waiting for those books has become something of a hobby in itself.

  10. I love Nathan Fillion. Totally recognized him in Saving Private Ryan and the weird, gross scifi movie Slither. I haven't caught much of the Game of Thrones show but I know if I started it, it would consume me the way Lost did.

  11. Hi Brandon, thanks for dropping by and commenting over at my blog. I like what you have going on here, so you've found another follower :)

I'm not a huge zombie fan, either, but I liked World War Z...sort of for the same reason I like Walking Dead...like you said, it's the characters. I think the whole Zombie Apocalypse is secondary to the character interaction and it can really suck you in.

I'm also a big Castle fan. It took me a while to warm up to the series but, after I started watching it, I got hooked! Great stuff :)
